Greening Lea Update – Groundbreaking & Grants!

Greening Lea OverheadThe West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools (WPCNS) is excited to share many exciting updates for the Greening Lea project!

Groundbreaking for the largest schoolyard phase began last month at the Lea School! Contractors ThinkGreen LLC and designers SALT Design Studio have made progress towards making a shady tree grove, lush rain gardens, and a new entrance into the play yard at 47th and Spruce a reality. Please stop by to see the work now well under way!

Rain GardeOn Saturday, October 17th, dozens of Lea students, families, neighbors will join volunteers from generous funders TD Bank via the Arbor Day Foundation and Coca-Cola through the Schuylkill River Restoration Fund for a TD Green Streets work day with teams of volunteers planting in the newly installed rain gardens. Additionally, volunteers from the Philadelphia Orchard Project will be on hand to assist with planting in the newly expanded “pilot” bed along Spruce Street. We are excited to have the community come together on this day and help green Lea!

PilotFurther, we are pleased to announce that WPCNS is the recipient of a second $10,000 grant from PECO Green Region for the Greening Lea project. Administered by the Natural Lands Trust, PECO Green Region supports organizations and initiatives that improve the quality of our environment. Previously in 2013 WPCNS received a $10,000 grant, which was matched overwhelmingly by the community. This second additional grant of the $10,000 maximum shows tremendous support from PECO for Greening Lea and this phase of the project.

Through the Greening Lea Naming Campaign, and the recent Close the Gap Campaign, community contributions have totaled nearly a quarter of this phase’s funding – an outstanding achievement that we hope will be a point of pride for the neighborhood. WPCNS is still actively fundraising and grant-writing to further fund this project and restore elements that were value-engineered to meet the phase budget. If you would still like to contribute, please donate here.
