UCD & Community Members Give Towards PECO Green Region $10,000 Match

The West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools (WPCNS) is pleased to announce several large donations towards its PECO Green Region matching requirement for the Greening Lea project. The University City District (UCD) has made a $1,000 fiscal-year-end donation.  UCD was helpful in providing material resources for the Greening Lea pilot project last Fall and is supportive of the project.

Community members, Johannah Fine and Joe Shapiro, have also made generous donations. Both Johannah and Joe have been actively involved in the greening project and were instrumental in making the pilot project happen. Johannah is an adjunct assistant professor in botany and soils at Temple, Ambler campus.  Joe is a retired engineer and a Tree Tender who is active in many greening groups around the city, particularly UC Green.  He graduated from Lea where his mother was also a teacher.  Both Johannah and Joe are residents of West Philadelphia.

“Through these sizeable donations from our community, the Greening Lea project is making significant progress towards our PECO Green Region matching goal,” said Greening Lea co-chair Julie Scott.

With these gifts plus more than 30 individual donations, WPCNS has raised over $8,000 [UPDATE: Match completed!] of the $10,000 match since the June 17th announcement of the grant and matching requirement. Over 75% of the donations have come from the 19143, 19104 and 19139 zip codes in West Philadelphia showing strong community support for the Greening Lea project.

WPCNS’s next goal is to complete the remaining matching requirement in time for the PECO Green Region check presentation on Tuesday, July 30th at the Please Touch Museum. To donate to Greening Lea, please click here: http://westphillyschools.org/donate/donate-to-greening-lea/
